Hi.
My dad just purchased a late 80`s early 90`s 30 hp johnson.

I think There are something wrong with the cooling.
When the enigine is cold there are a strong cooling water beam that comes out of the cooling hose from the enigine block.
But when the enigine gets warmer the cooling water beam is less powerful, and in the end. Its only some drops of water.

In the same time, it comes more water from the exhaust.
Is this normal ??
We have the in a barrel of water.

I checked the impeller , and it looks fine..

See the last owner said that , when the motor got warm it died.
we have just runned the motor on idle speed for 15min- then i noticed the cooling beam...

Do you have any idea???

and i know my english sucks, but iam norwegian...
thx

I am thinking maybe the head gasket has a leak. Remove the spark plugs and inspect them, if one of them looks like it has been steam cleaned then you have found your problem. Do a compression test first, both cylinders should read about the same. P.S. Thats OK Im a Finlander.

Re: 30 hp runs hot

i checked the spark plugs- They where worn quite a bit, and they looked like the motor were running a bit rich.
I will replace the spark plugs, in this weekend.

What about this exhaust trubbel. Should the water come out with the exhaust??

thx

many impellers look ok, but they actually have hardened and taken a "set". they are no longer flexible, and do not perform properly. check your compression, that will tell you if you have a blown head gasket. it the motor has had salt water use, the tstat may be corroded.
