Does any one know where I might get information leading to how to remove a powerhead to this motor? How to get it apart from the beginning. Starting with the removal of lower unit just a total tear down. My starter mount where it attaches to the front of the motor is stripped and a small chunk or the right side is missing. Need to get powerhead off so i can get the whole welded and retapped.

Thanks in advance

Your local library may have the service manual, they usually do. Worth checking into.

An "Inconsiderate Political Lesbian?" None that I know of. :)

Seriously, I'm sure that someone will be along shortly with that info.

Ironsetr..... List the model number of that engine, or if you are absolutely sure of the year, list that. THe model number is preferred.

With that, we will know exactly what needs to be done and may be able to walk you thru some of that project.

The model is a J30TEENR. I know i need to start by pulling off the lower unit. the motor is a long shaft. Just don't know what has to be done from there in order to pull powerhead off.

The model number of J30TEENR indicates that your engine is a 1992 30hp Johnson. I retired in 1991 and am not familiar with any changes that may have been done on that model pertaining to design or its circuitry so I will back out of this topic and hope that the other more knowledgeable members will jump in here to advise you.

Thanks Joe.
But aren't they pretty standard as far as separating the top from the bottom?

Re: 30 Johnson power head removal

Usually yes, but the manufacture has in the past made radical changes from one year to the next.

The usual procedure is to disconnect the battery, disconnect the shift linkage rod, disconnect the fuel supply line(s) as needed, and disconnect the electrical wiring/cables.... however there are areas in these fields whereas it is not necessary to disconnect everything and that's where the design changes come into the picture.

What is left is to disconnect the shift and throttle cables from the engine if they exist, then to start removing the powerhead retaining bolts.
