30 or 50 AMP

I just purchased a 2002 Mariner. The previous owner had the boat hooked up to a 50 AMP line. The new marina I am at has 30 and 50, howeever I have to pay more for 50 AMP service. My question is, the a/c and ice maker are on one line, and the rest of the boat (refrig, battery charger, lights, etc.) are one the other line. When docked I only use the battery charger, bilge pumps, and a/c. Since the a/c is one one line and the other things on the second line can I split a 30 AMP service? Will it cause an overload or present a problem? I realize that if I use all available electrical sources on the boat using only 30AMP's I will blow fuses and popssibly cause a fire. How do other owners hook up at the marina?

Re: 30 or 50 AMP

Marinco makes a 30A Y adapter, but it is regulated to pull only 30A total. What you want to do won't work.

Can you swap the ice machne and battery charger circuits so the charger is on the same main as the A/C? If you can, then you might get away with a single 30. Of course, all your dual voltage stuff will only run on 12V, so your charger and batteries will be busy, even at the dock.

I had the same problem and the marina suggested a 50 amp split to 2 30 amp, a 50 amp y spliter serving the two 30 amp input to the boat.

it is likely 30AMPs total and running two lines to two sockets on shore power will not make a difference.

You need to know how many amps each electrical appliance that runs off shore power will draw. This includes your battery charger but does not include anything that runs solely off the battery.

If all your appliances together draw less than 80% of 30amps then you are ok. Otherwise you need to go for the 50amp connection. Safety first.

Cheers!
