30 Rude Ignition - Timing or fuel?

89 30hp Evinrude. This motor sat for 5 years. I have replaced - all fuel lines, primer bulb, fuel pump, primer selonoid, water pump. I cleaned the carb and did a kit. The float is set at level minus 1/16" with 3/4" drop ( the old float was set at level minus 1/4" with 3/4" drop). I only had spark on the top cylinder (#1?). Replaced the power pack, ignition coils, plugs and plug wires. I now have fire on both plugs. The motor has a slight miss at idle with the muffs on. when I power up it boggs down heavy then trys to accelerate in at about 3 second cycles. Once or twice it powered up normally to wide open, decellerated to 1/2 throttle normal then cycled when decellerating back to idle. Tonight I,ll check for the correct wire placement from the power pack to the ignition coils. The charge coil wires to the power pack were both brown/green I may have reversed them. Would this make a differance? I understand that the woodruff key positioning under the flywheel can affect the timing but I never removed it. I didn't have this problem back when it was running on only one cylinder it accelerated pretty smooth for one cylinder. Any Ideas?

PS I did test the compression and I have 122lbs cold on both cylinders.

I'd suspect fuel. The timing doesn't change unless something changes it. Get a squirt bottle with some premix in it and give the carb a shot and see what happens. Should pick up and run.

c/6

Hooty

I didn't try the straight in the carb trick yet Hooty but I did - Pull the flywheel and go over my power pack install looking for pinched wires (none) and reversed the charge coil to power pack leads and carefully positioned the woodruff key. The motor started fine and initally ran well at WOT. I thought my troubles may be over. Wrong. After setting at idle for just a minute or so it did the same thing when I throttle up. I agree that this sounds like a fuel problem. When I very slowly increase throttle I can hear it starving and a quick increase gives me the ole quick up down surging.Squeezing the primer ball has no effect. I did have a thought. The primer bulb was on a short fuel line that I intended to lengthen latter on. Could it be that the ball check in the primer bulb ( which I can hear ticking after being squeezed at about the same interval as my problem) is restricting the fuel since it was pointed up and the draw would have to exceed the ball weight?? I added more hose so that is now laying down but I didn't want to wake the neighbors and couldn't try it last night. I additionlly checked the resistance on my charge coil which is per book spec BUT I also got a reading that the charge coil was shorted to ground?? I'm not sure about this since my harness plugs were different than the book layout. I may not of been testing the right leads (the two large pins)The charge coil is only 25 bucks so I went ahead and ordered one. That will leave only the stator as an original part outside the power head. Ideas??

Well no luck. I checked my fuel and my tank vent. Same thing, OK at first for only a minute and then the same. I did try spraying WD40 straight in the carb and it had no effect. I had trouble torquing down the fly wheel nut by myself and now have some weeble wobble of the fly wheel and feel some side to side as well as some up down play. Now I get to worry about it for a week untill my new charge coil comes in and I pull it again. I'll get some help tighting it the next time. I had used a puller and didn't pry on it.Once or twice it acctually scraped on something.I sure hope I am worried about nothing.
