I have a 100 rivets drilled out to put patches over cracked areas where the boat is having trouble. I have to add about 200 more fasteners to hold these plates on. Problem is some of the holes were drilled out less than perfect and straight so we are nervous about using solid rivets as they might leak. So we were going to switch over to machine screws and nuts as they look more straight forward and could handle the imperfect holes by using some 3m 5200 on each and also back buttered on the plates.

so we did have someone tell us the aliumum boat as it will be in salt water will corrode out in no time. We were hoping that the 5200 and nylon washers might isolate it from the boat.

We do have the opion i guess, to use 100 stainless screws an the rest solid rivets, but it might look cheap, then we have to buy a rivet gun and drill perfect holes for those, feels more straight forward and will look nicer to have all the same fasteners.

Any advice on here? thanks guys.

stainless and aluminum in presence of salt means your boat would dissolve. 5200 and nylon washers do nothing for the shank of the bolt. nylon is too soft and will extrude out. you would need G10 Garolite or similar washer.

are you looking at 316, 404 or 18-8 fasteners, because the 304 and 18-8 will rust when in contact with salt water.

go with the correct rivets and either 5200 or sika-flex, there is a reason that bolts are not used from the factory
