74 SeaRay 24' with a 302 and a TR2 stern drive. I can run without any problem, but after I have run for say an hour shut down and then start up again maybe 1/2 hr. It starts find but when I go and shift it into gear the engine dies. I do believe that it doesn't have enough gas to run in gear(floats are set right). I'm thinking that something may be in to tank plugging the line causing poor gas suction out of the tank.
Does anyone have anyother ideas before I drain the tank and take a look inside hopefully the tank holds about 70 gals.
Thanks for any help

Next time the issue occurs, crack open the fill cap. Any pressure, or vaccuum?

If so, consider replacing the fuel tank outlet valve.

Check all of your filters....
I would look at the pickup screen in the tank for starters....JK

If you can run for an hour, shut off and then re-start, all with no problems, you don't have a fuel blockage. Does the engine die every time going into gear (like when going into gear before the "one hour" run), or just on that re-start cycle (I assume there's no starting problem)? If it's on the re-start of a hot engine, you probably have a timing and/or a cut-out switch problem. The cut-out switch momentarily kills the engine to relieve gear pressure to allow easier shifting. Tell me more.

It sounds like the boat was on the choke when you first started out and then when it warmed up the choke stepped off and the rpm went down too low. Try warming up the engine all the way and then adjusting the rpm when the choke is wide open. There is a cam that attaches to the choke plate that increses the idle when the engine is cold.
