I have a 1980 sea arrow with a 305.anyone have a diagram of how the solenoid and starter gets wired from the hookup on top of the motor and the solenoid on the back of the motor, another on the starter...it has a 50 amp breaker with a red wire coming out of it and a big main plug, two small wires, one purple and yellow and one yellow and red striped? Thanks.

Re: 305 mercruiser solenoid starter question

Here is a link to the wiring diagram, since you say it has the purple/yellow wire, I have to assume it's the 898 engine with a points ignition system as the engines with Thunderbolt ignition didn't have a purple/yellow wire.
It's kind of hard to see where the wires go on the starter slave solenoid so I will explain.
The purple/yellow wire goes to the small terminal marked "I" on the solenoid, the yellow/red wire from the ignition switch goes to the other small terminal marked "S" on the solenoid. Black is ground to the base, the ones on the large terminals are clearly seen in the drawing.

Thanks Don, It is an 898 with points. I can't open the shared file on this computer. Is there another way to send it? Thanks

See if the picture is big enough.

Thanks Don, That should be perfect. You don't know how much I appreciate this. Did this come out of the manual? I can get it at home but not on this computer at work. Many thanks,Ronnie

Don does the yellow red go from the big post on slave solenoid to small on starter and hot straight to starter......is there anything on the other small wire on the starter.....I am sorry i cannot see the drawing so well. I can get the starter to spin but the bindix is not kicking into the flywheel.
