30hp johnson tachometer pluse settings

Hello I been looking and got a number of different answers as to how many pluses to set my tachometer to. Teleflex says 2 pulses and other sites say 5 and even 6 does anyone know the correct setting

I have a thirty with a tac but it's at my summer home. AI says 6 but seems like it was the 2.

Changing the button though as far as I know won't screw anything up...it just won't read correctly. If you just change it eventually you will figure it out.

One disclaimer, this is how I've done it with no issues so buyer beware.

Maybe someone will come along and verify.

Thanks I wonder also I see people talking 10 and 12 pluses so I am lost it dont make sense as I dont know of an outboard of more than 6 cylinders but again thanks

Look up the tach mfgr and go from there. In my experience setting the wrong pole only gives a false reading.

I will try it i dont want to burn up the tachometer. I wonder why so many people have a different answer tho

Pulses are not from cylinders, there from magnets under the flywheel I believe. Gets much more technical.
