Hi, long time viewer first time poster. My Mariner 30hp (2000 is the year )stopped the other day and upon closer inspection I found that most of the wiring in it had burnt/melted on it.
Why?? i presume it was a short? as it was running for about an hour when this happened.
Also, how hard is this going to be to solve ? i can't see a wiring harness so does this mean replacing coil packs, rectifiers etc, as they have the wiring prepackaged into them??

any advice greatly accepted ....

What is the s/n of your engine, two or four stroke?

Re: 30hp mariner wiring burnt

That s/n comes up between two different s/n ranges:

25/30HP (2 CYL/430CC) INTERNATIONAL

but your description of the electrical system makes it:

30/40 (2 CYLINDER) 2-STROKE

Where are you located and have you had this engine since new?

I have the service manual P/Ns for both but want to make sure I give you the right P/N.

Re: 30hp mariner wiring burnt

Here is the parts listing for the International engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/4404.cfm

and the one for the 30/40:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/3021.cfm

Yours definitely sounds like the 30/40 but according to the s/n and your location it should be the International one.

However, you can have a look at both, carbs, fuel pumps, etc and see which one is yours.

The service manual for the International is 90-853985
30/40 is 90-826148R03

Though yours is a Mariner the 30/40 uses the same manual as the Mercury and though it is one revision behind, it will assist you.

Let me know if this is any help.

Re: 30hp mariner wiring burnt

hi just a follow up to this , all this wiring stuffgot the better of me and so i brought it to a pro, now he says that i have a Mariner 30 hp with a Tohatsu engine and so some of the parts are obsolete. Would this be correct and if so what is the solution, seemingly the coil is gone, CDI, rectifier, basically all electrical components are shot and need new ones.... if there is one place i can get help it's here... thanks.

My buddy here in Ottawa is a tohatsu dealer and may be able to help you get the parts but it won't be a cheap venture. If you want his contact info let me know and I will PM you the details.

Fish;

Don't be disturbed by the engine maker. Yes, it is a Japanese built Mariner, some are built by Yamaha and Tohatsu, under license. The parts list I sent you shows that most of the parts are still available. You should make a list of everything you need, then start removing those components one at a time and recording the available part numbers on them. You can post the list of recorded numbers here if you wish and I will gladly help you find the parts.

You really do not have an alternate at the moment, so it is worth finding out just how much it is going to cost.

The other thing you might look into is contacting CDI:

http://cdielectronics.com/

and explaining your situation. With your s/n, they may be able to help you with everything you need or give you good advice about how to proceed. At least then, you have some first hand knowledge from a reputable agency.

Let us know what you want to do and how it goes.

King,, the words "won't be a cheap venture" make me shiver.... I'll first try Gerry's advice and if no good comes from it ,i'll revert to yourself, thanks.

Gerry,

Are you just a bottomless pit of info.... thanks again. leave it with me and i'll start making that list and see where I go from there..

Na it's all good, whatever he needs you and I can work together, CDI is also an option.

Either way won't be a cheap venture, powerpacks and stators aren't cheap no matter where you get them. By cheap I mean getting it back on the water for $50.

fish;

Can you give me the wire colours coming out of each of those components or the number of wires as I am trying to make sense of your electrical system. Those p/ns are not much use at the moment.

How is your boat set up? Do you have remote controls, did you have charging capability before the problem?

One of the components looks to be the Voltage regulator.

Re: 30hp mariner wiring burnt

gerry,

I have a 14ft fletcher sppedboat hooked up to it by way of remote controls. I did have a slight issue with the battery not charging leading up to issue and i was putting that down to an old battery as it had come out of winterinsing and only been used a handful of times this year.

First part mentioned has 4 wires leading from it , black, white, yellow red.

2nd part has brown, red, blue and yellow/black coming from it but there also was another wire which has been incinerated by the damage so i can't give a colour or even let you know where it lead to.

Stator also has wire damage coming from it , but i'm finding it hard to remove the flywheel nut so i can get in to remove it. ANy tips on hoiw to do this ?? the flywheel is turning freely and i dare not lever against it to apply pressure to the top nut in case i damge the flywheel too..

kevin.
