I have a 30 hp nissan never had any problems until now. It ran great one day the next i was going across lake and it acted like it ran out of gas. I know the carb is clean. Im getting spark and fuel. Will crank sometimes if at full throttle but runs rough and will not crank in neutral can anyone help?

"will not crank"? As in seized? Or do you mean "it doesn't start"?

Probably a fuel system issue. You need to take it into a dealer and let them determine what aspect of the fuel system is causing the problem. It might also be an ignition or mechanical problem. There is no way to determine the cause of the problem unless the engine's systems are tested.

Re: 30hp nissan wont crank

I have a 30 HP Nissan four stroke that stays down. Stayed 6 weeks in shop 2 years ago. Mechanic even had Nissan rep come in. Will crank and run sometimes. I ran it yesterday and full throttle fine. I stopped and then it died and would crank fine then die when put in gear. Runs with hose on it. I feel it is carbs but I always run it dry or drain bowls and keep it running at least one time month in off season. I use stabilizer??? I am tired of spending money on it> Sometimes at full throttle if you hit wave it will go to 1/3 throttle. Use good gas and have checked for water in gas, air hosed it out with drain screws out of bowls, carb cleaner used. Wish I had old 2 stroke again. Any Ideas? Plugs seem OK

You did not mention model, but I suppose when you mention "carbs" (plural) that you have an NSF30A... Stalling when going into gear is likely a fuel-related problem, but could be almost anything from what you mentioned. When was the last time the carbs were overhauled? Even a microscopic bit of crud in the fuel system could cause your problem. If you over-rev coming off a wave, the ESG is supposed to engage, limiting the WOT RPM until you stop and restart, which may be your "1/3 throttle" situation.

I put new plugs in yesterday. Put hose on it. Pulled one plug wire off at a time. Botttom and middle ran rough, top wire off, ran no different. Narrowed it down to top cylinder. Dealer said probably low speed jet in top carb. At wot on lake the low spped jet is not used therefore running ok. Sounds like carb job again. This will be number three! Should not have to do this. I have had numerous outboards and none are this bad.

Run the gas out of the engine at the end of each trip...It is not the fault of engine that fuel evaporates when left in a carb(s).
