I have a 30hp 2005 4strk Carburated outboard bought new last year. At the end of last season the coil on #1 broke in half and started smoking when I tried to start it. What would cause this. Just a faulty coil or bigger issues? My dealer is a barge ride away so hoping to fix myself or take to another "brand" of dealer.

Sounds like a possible faulty coil. Also sounds like an old-stock motor, as these have been EFI for some time. If the coil did not suffer any external trauma, it may be covered under warranty. I would check with your local dealer.

Less than three years old it should be covered under warranty, but chances are taking the engine cover off and on is the reason the coil broke. When that cover goes back on it would be pretty easy to smack the #1 coil with the cover causing a crack in it.

The cover story makes sense. It is covered under waranty, they send me a new one, but the electric connections didn't match up. Hope they can get it right. Did Tohatsu change the style of the connectors in the last 5 years?

Tohatsu wouldn't send you anything. They work through the dealer network and that would require you to take the engine into a dealer for them to replace the coil....And yes, there are different coils.

Tohatsu send the coil to my dealer, he just didn't get them to send him the right one. He has the serial number and model number so I hope the new coil he is getting works for me this time.
