I just installed new coils, condensor's, plugs, and points. Motor is very stubborn to start, I got it running for about 20 minutes, havent been able to get r going now all night. Letting her cool off and will being again tomorrow..

anyone have any insight as to why its such a "pig" to start? I know my battery is bad, I jump it with the car.

Not looking too good for any season out of this boat......

Do a compression test first, should be 100 or more and all cylinders within 10%.

Confirm spark with a spark tester, strong spark over 7/8 gap.

If you have spark and compression and still no fire that would point to fuel so a carb rebuild is next.

Strongly reccomend a factory manual(not Seloc or Clymers or anything on CD) it has a very helpful trouble shooting guide that will get you going.

I did buy the carb kit, I was waiting to venture to the carb.. that will be the next project !


The local library still has many old manuals for this motor I will check before buying one.

It was a beautiful site today to hear the ol motor fire up! Previous owner had added two solenoids to the circuit, My brother in law and I tore it out and re-wired everything, we discovered today the impeller had next to nothing left to it. We fired the hose up inside the bottom end after we removed it to discover a small leak on the head gasket.

Looks like another weekend of work and perhaps I can finally enjoy the boat. I cant complain... bought it for $550 CDN 17foot Brunswick Fibreglass with the Johnson 33.

Question:
1. I have for anyone here, the plate under the impeller... shoul dit have what appers to be a dent in it? or should it be flat?

Im about to order a new impeller and head Gasket, and was checking about the plate...

2. Any Schematics for wiring of a Johnson 33 around? I have the books from the library, they dont appear to show all the wiring

I can start the boat, the choke button is working, but the motor doesnt shut down when the key is turned off... I have to stall the motor.
