Got all the electrical done. Plugs, wires, coils, points, condensors, new key switch. New impeller, new fuel lines, new fuel pump. Fresh gas. Hit the switch and it fired right up. BUT, it wants to sputter a little and then backfire and die. I did not go through the carb. I do have a kit but I wanted to see if it would even run before going to that trouble, but I did spray it real good first. So, hopefully this is just a carb cleaning and rebuild problem. Any other ideas besides the carb? I'm not really up on points ignition. The way I set them was to turn the crank to the highest position and set to 20k. Then did the other set the same way. Was that right? Also, starter bendix stuck in up position. Easy fix? Or new starter?

If it fired right up I wouldn't worry about ignition right now. Clean the carbs good. Spray some sewing machine oil lightly on your starter and it should free it up. You probably will have to turn the flywheel by hand a little to get the bendix to drop down. Points sound like they are set right.

flywheel does not have starter bendix in a bind. I can move it up and down, just cant get it to drop back into its rest position

Hi ron. I would definitely rebuild the carb. It's not hard and you can get a rebuild kit, along with a tune up kit for about $20 each right here at iboats. Here are two great links that can walk you through a carb and ignition rebuild. They're for slightly different models, but all of the steps will be the same for your motor. Be sure you use GRADE 8 bolts and washers on the flywheel puller as well.

5.5 HP Evinrude Johnson 1954-1954 Carburetor Tune-Up Procedure
3 HP Evinrude Lightwin Ignition System Tune-Up 1952-1967

I've already done all the ignition. And I have a carb kit. I didn't want to waste the time doing that before I found out if it would even run. Now that I know it will run I don't mind taking the carb back off and going through it. I've done several so it's no problem. Got the starter problem solved, it just needed some oil on the shaft and threads. Solenoid has been intermittent so I just got another and am going to put it on now.

I like using sewing machine oil for starters. It's llight enough that it doesn't attract a lot of dirt. Glad it worked.
