I just got my 1970 33 runnin great. Problem is, I have a 1977 evinrude 25 that is half the size and really does almost as good. The 33 goes a little faster and planes a little quicker but........the 25 is about a third less weight. uses less gas, and planes almost as fast. Still planes. Why should I keep the 33? I live in eastern nc, what can I get out of a perfectly running engine?

Re: 33 johnson

Hi ron. I used to have a '66 33hp Johnson myself and I currently run a '66 20hp as well. You've pretty much laid out all of the pros and cons already. While both motors will more or less achieve the same speed, the ease with which they can do it will vary greatly. The 25hp is probably best if you're going to be running fairly light loads (1-2) guys fishing. However, if you plan on carrying heavier loads on a routine basis, you might want to stick with the 33hp which should get up up on plane more easily and allow you to cruise at lower rpm, which may actually save you gas in the long run when compared to running the 25hp at WOT all the time to stay on plane. It's kind of like comparing a Truck to a Sports Car. They can both hit 60mph, but they do so in very different ways.
