Hi group,
I am an engine restorer in the UK specialising in many engines not just outboards, so I hop I can be of assistance here too, as well as ask for some help.

I do have a quick question for you all. I am restoring a 1965 33hp Evinrude Ski-Twin, and wondering if anyone knows of a suitable carburettor to replace the standard unit with all the manual adjustments etc

I had read somewhere that a Johnson 40 carb will fit directly onto the manifold, but I'm not sure what year carb that could be, and if any spacer gaskets are required.

Has anyone here had any experience in swapping carbs from Johnson units to Evinrudes.

Thanks in advance,
Vince

Re: 33hp Evinrude 1965 CARB swap

Johnsons and Evinrudes are virtually identical for a given year and horsepower. The 40hp carbs ('60-'70) will directly bolt on to a 33hp, but will take some adjusting to get working right. I belive the 40hp carbs have a slightly larger bore.
The 28hp/33hp/40hp carbs from the 60s are all close to identical externally (except for the choke, etc), but there's some subtle differences in the number and size of the idle orifaces. Of course, if they're not fully adjustable carbs you'll also need to rejet the high speed oriface to suit the engine. For example, have a look at this 40hp carb's throat:
Click here, way down the page. My 33hp carb has 4 ports here, while my 28hp carbs have only two.
Best bet would be to stick with a 33hp carb if at all possible.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but that's simply not true. I just have an unhealthy obsession with old Johnny/Rudes! :D

Many, many thanks guys, especially Paul, for your help with this, I will certainly rebuild the original carb, and I think that it would be nicer to keep original anyway. I have a good source for parts, and the missing bits could easily be obtained I think.

Vince
