I have a 1987 Johnson 90hp, it uses the 35 amp, water cooled regulator/rectifier. Using the test outlined by Joe Reeves (man is that guy knowledgeable) that the Reg/Rect is bad (erratic tach, no output at battery)

My question is on compatibility between years/part numbers.

PREVIOUS (1984) number for this unit shows as 582904, superceded to 395391

For (1985-1987), I see the part number for this listed as 395391.

I also see that number superceded again to 395204 but nothing past that for supercedes/part number changes.

I have a parts motor here (1990) which lists the same 35 amp regulator part number as 583529 (shows 1988-1990 with that number)

My question(s) are,
-what is the change?,
-will this unit (583529)work to replace the 395391 unit currently on my engine?
-Is the difference due to the single powerpack setup starting in 1988 as opposed to my 2 powerpack setup in 1987?

I hope I have not made it confusing, just trying to determine if a 1990 90hp regulator rectifier will fit my 1987 90hp?

Re: 35 amp regulator/rectifier interchange years?

Ok guys, upon further investigation, I see that the 1988-1990 regulator/rectifiers (583529)are rated at 10 amps, so they are not a direct replacement for the 35 amp unit (395391) which I have on my 1987 90hp.
Thanks anyway, I will post my next question above.
