just had the boat in the water for the first time and all in all it worked quite well.
couple of questions though.
1)i did a search and found something about if there is 2 yellow wires coming out under the flywheel that i have a stator.and a stator will keep my battery charged up .what keeps the battery from getting overcharged?
2)motor will momentarily jump out of forward gear when in motion but when i disconnected shifter cable and shifted manually it ran great all day without jumping out of gear,,,i,m assuming i have to adjust my shifter linkage.
3)changed lower unit lube when i got the motor and just checked it after running her today...looks like a bit of a creamier version than what i put in last week.is there a seal i should have replaced when i put the impeller in last week that would seal any water from getting in by the drive shaft as it goes in to the water pump...if there is not a seal there where else would you look for water getting in to the lower unit oil.

1. the charge is a very slow trickle charge and will not overcharge the battery.
2.Yes, just adjust your cable.
3. Let it settle for an hour or so and then check it for milkiness or water running out. It will be frothy right after running. You might want to change the neoprene washer on the drain bolts. Common way for water to get in.

If you have water in the oil it should be the first to drain.

no water in lower unit to speak of.....just the colour of the oil is lighter than it was when i put it in.new the oil is kind of see through and dark brown....now oil is much lighter colour but still the same consistency and i see no water when i let it settle overnight.maybe thats what this oil looks like after its been given a good workout?

Re: 35 h.p. johnson 1980 ..couple of questions.

just checked lower unit in my 15 h.p. evinrude...i replaced that oil last year and then used the motor quite a bit.oil in that motor is just like it was when i put it in.dark and kind of transparent.same brand of oil in both.
that leaves me to believe i have some water getting in...i replaced both plastic washers for drain and fill plug a week ago so i can rule that out.is there a seal behind the prop?what a bout a seal between where drive shaft and waterpump meet? is there another spot i can look for water leaking in?

I would run it a few times and see if it gets milky. I agree that it should not lighten up but just because it is a little lighter I don't think I want to tear apart a lower unit unless this is a commericial boat and has heavy use. Just keep checking it after each outing ans see what it looks like. I am only a backyard dude but if you have a leak it is a very small one and if you change it each year I think that you will be fine. If you really feel the need to find this there are fiche on ishopmarine that will tell you exactly where everything is and part numbers to boot.
