Hey, I'm new to owning a boat and motor, so I need some advice.
I bought a 14' Marlin 500 boat, it's made by Duraplex Products. (never heard of it). It has a 35 HP Chrysler on it. I got it almost free, so not a large investment.
I was told that it ran the last time it was out (8 years ago) but they lost the bottom end and had to be towed in. I tore it apart and the whole bottom end needs to be rebuilt/replaced. My question is, eventhough I got it real cheap, is it worth getting this thing going?

Yes. Used parts are all over the place. It should be easy to get it running. valleysales@charter.net Has lots of used parts.
Always add the model/serial #s so anyone helping can identify you motor.J

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

Thanks a lot Jerry!! Very good points.

Model # 35742 Serial # 1147

I think I have determined (somewhere online) that it's a 1967 motor. Can anyone confirm or debunk that?

Jerry, would you suggest that I rebuild the carb? Replace all fuel lines?

I will be posting a number of photos shortly in hopes that you guys can help me with names of parts etc. and possibly diagnose why the motor quit driving.

Thanks for now!

If you mean bottom end as in performance I would guess you blew a fuel pump diaphragm. If that is the case a rebuild kit for that pump is only about 12 bucks. I believe the part number is 18-7806. If you mean bottom end as in the lower unit a 35,45 and 55 hp lower unit will work for that motor. Before dumping money into it do a compression test and a spark plug test. If compression numbers are bad it is not worth fixing. Bad spark can be a problem as well for coils are real hard to find for that motor

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

Thanks, euro!! As far as I was told, the motor ran fine, but they lost the bottom end of the motor. (it would no longer drive). I'll be posting pics of the gears and such.......they're not good!! I was wondering if I could "mix n match" motors to any extent..now I know......thanks for that!!!

Incedentally, what is an acceptable compression test?? At what point is the "keep it or junk it" line?

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

In these pics you'll see that a chunk is missing out of one of the rollers in the bearing. Is this possibly the cause of the whole failure and the culprit of all the damage?

More pics to come.

Thanks for all the help so far!!

Also, the prop shaft appears to have and inconsistent diameter.......should it not be consistent through the whole length?

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

Can anyone tell me, by looking at the pics, whether any of the gears are ok? Or should I replace them all?

In the water pump pic it looks like corrosion of some sort inside, is there a way to clean it or should I replace it?

The part in the second pic is the part that seals off the very bottom end (what's it called?) needs to be replaced. It appears that someone tried to glue it or something. Will I have trouble finding that part? Is it also inter-changable from other motors?

I apologize for SO many questions, and I appreciate any help/guidance I get from you guys!!

Here's a pic of the boat and motor and trailer I got for $100. I know it's not much but I hope it'll be worth it in the end.

Feel free to comment!!

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

The second picture you posted is a busted bearing cage. A new one is around 100 dollars part number is31-817731A5. I would start looking at ebay if you want to salvage this motor. The dogs are pretty worn but might be salvaged by a good machine shop or accurate work with a dremel. Good compression numbers would be equal numbers on each cylinder at least 100 psi for each cylinder and within 10 psi per cylinder. You are dealing with motor that is over 40 years old. The parts you need have not been made for probably at least 30 years. I bought a lower unit for my 45 on ebay for 50 bucks and have been running it for almost 5 years now so it is possible to find parts but part of it is luck. If compression and spark is good try ebay. Keep an eye on it over the winter and you might find what you need. Older 35,45 and 55 hp lower units used to be common but not so much anymore. If you can find one without the busted bearing cage for under 50 bucks you might be able to do the rest with a dremel. Good luck

Re: 35 HP Chrysler

Thanks euro, I actually bought another motor (over the phone) today. It's a 45 with a blown upper piston, but apparently the lower is good. The guy said he used it up until this spring. I only paid $75 for it so it's not like it's a lot of money. Cheaper than a newer motor at least. I should have it in a couple weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed!
