I was given a 35 hp Gale that I want to put on my recently bought tri-hull the model number of the motor is #35DG12B i dont know if that helps. I'm unsure of the year. But it has electric start and I dont know what I need to get it to work. Do I need a solenoid? some kind of ignition switch? Where do all the wires go?

I believe that is a 59 Could find only 35DE12B.Delixe Electric start.
If it has a generator you'll need a regulator.Usually mounted in a box on the transom. There may be substitutes you may find help at www.aomci.org
Yes you need a solenoid and An outboard keyswitch. It would contain everything, stop, start and electric choke.Ignition is self generating and I think the key shorts the 2 black wires from under the flywheel together to kill.Choke is a red wire.Solenoid white. You could use a start button, and a choke button with a 3rd button as a kill switch. In the old days we used to use the choke to stop. The only drawing I have is a little muddled so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Now if i were you, id throw a multimeter on the wiring first to make sure that all connections are still quality and are usable....making sure nothing is crossed, or grounding out.

I was unaware there ever was a 35 Gale with a factory installed generator, but you seem to have one according to the model number. (The "G") in the number. Later 40hp motors were available that way as 40DGxxB.

If you do indeed have a generator, you need a voltage regulator to make it work. That and the solenoid and connections were all included in a junction box.

You don't have to use the generator though. Maybe you would prefer to remove it and sell it.

Thanks for the replies. If i didnt want to use the generator on it can i still charge the battery from the motor or is that what the generator is for?

The generator resembles the starter and is on the oposite side.Driven by a belt to the flywheel. The generator is not necessary. The ignition is self powered doesn't use the battery.Motor can be started many many times before a battery charge is necessary though it's better to charge the battery regularly.
