'82 or '83 Johnson 35 hp. Tiller, long shaft w/electric start.<br /><br />Model #J35RLCND<br /><br />When purchased, ran fine in neutral in the tank.<br />Put on boat, went to lake and started in neutral. Every time went to put in gear, would die. Tried 8 more times with same results.<br /><br />Got manual from library and read all posts pertaining to the 35 hp.<br /><br />Went thru fuel pump, fuel filter, and put new gas line from tank to motor. Reset low idle according to specs in manual.<br /><br />Next day, went to lake again. Started her up, put in gear, and she'd run, but only to about 4-9 mph. Ran fine in reverse.<br /><br />Tinkering with this first-time project, motor seems strong, has started up consistently, and there has been no back or mis-fires of any kind.<br />Doesn't run rough, and hasn't over-heated.<br />After running it the second time, checked plugs: Top one clean, looked brand new, but had gas on it. Bottom plug was black.<br /><br />Should I be considering a fuel rebuild kit and/or carb rebuild kit?<br /><br />Any advice or knowledge is appreciated in advance.<br /><br />Thanks!
