hi guys,i have vitually changed everything on this motor from head gaskits, thermostats, impeller and housings also exhaust gaskits have stuck hose up water tube to check for blockages and she still overheats to the point were steam comes out. When running on muffs it will start out cold and then she will get hot and the steam starts all over again. The only other problem that maybe i assume the problem to be would be the rubber grommet underneath the power head itself where the water tube runs, please can somebody help me out cheers.................:confused:

Have you checked your thermostat in a pan of hot water to make sure that it is opening properly? Sounds like you have a blockage in a water passage. You say that you have run a hose up the water tube but did it come out as fast as you put it in? Take the thermostat out and run your water again. you may have a blockage on the exhaust side and you will need to remove the cover and check those passages. I have had to take the wire out of a piece of romex and thread it through the passages to clear out gunk that had built up.

Re: 35 still overheats

are you sure you are not pinching the grommet for the water tube at the water pump. really easy to do, and it then blocks the passage. have you back washed the lower unit. could be clog in pick up. had that problem chased it forever.

Re: 35 still overheats

I hope she's fixed, but if not, here's an idea I like to try to at least get my problem down to the lower unit or powerhead. I take a piece of 3/8 fuel line and put it on my water tube with the lower unit off. Then put the water hose over the fuel line with duct tape and turn on the water, crank up the motor, and let it idle. You can see what the indicator looks like and give it a little it of throttle and run it for a minute or two to see if it's getting hot. If so, you know the problem is above the water tube.
Just an idea,

Did you check your intake??
Zebra mussels love to hang out in there.
If you have your engine in the water all the time(when you have your boat in a slip) this is a real problem.

Re: 35 still overheats

ok just tried what jbjennings told me to do,mate ihave to say that your theory actually worked nothing was getting blocked and nothing got hot to the point where i couldnt touch it,everything was normal, thermo was working and water was luke warm to touch rather than boiling or steam hot.it has led me to beleive that lower unit was installed incorrectly which has also led me to beleive that tashasdaddy was right in having a pinched grommet on installing lower unit,I will install lower unit tomorrow and test it at the lake, all fingers and toes crossed, sure hope it works.....cheers Ill keep you all posted with results..........LIFE IS GOOD IN LAND DOWN UNDER.....

Re: 35 still overheats

gday to all,ok here is the conclusion to my lower unit, put it back together and took out to the lake, nothing overheated and it ran like a bullet at W.O.T for at least 35min till i almost ran out of fuel.It has seriously led me to beleive that on installing lower unit i must have pinched the grommet which would have in dought caused ashut off valve scenario.Anyway its all good now im very happy.:)
