351 Ford Ignition Problems

Boat hasn't run since November. Had a bad cold spell on Oregon coast in December. Didn't have antifreeze in block, but the freeze plugs thankfully popped out with no damage. Problem is when I turn the engine, and engage the starter, the engine will not fire at all. The starter just turns over and over. I have power to the coil. I bought a new coil, and installed it. Still, I have no spark coming out of the coil's main wire that goes to distributor. I have an old points ignition system, and am wondering if those points need to be serviced or replaced by an electronic ignition conversion kit. Will the coil spark not exist if the points are corroded? Doesn't the voltage first pass through the coil? This all means that my old coil was probably ok as the new coil is not throwing spark either. I see that there is a wire going to the distributor from the postive terminal of the coil. I also have my electric choke wire running from that positive coil to the carb. Any advice is much appreciated!

Is this 351 Ford a Mercruiser, Volvo, or OMC? And what year?

Its probably a winsor or cleveland engine...........original ford with points.......yes the points have to be clean for the coil to fire........with the key on you can move the points open and close and the coil will fire. Just file the points and reset to specs and it will work. But if they are really corroded replace with new...........

Gee, no kidding ?

PS: You can file point only to see what the problem is. After testing, they need replaces as the deteriorate quickly after being filed.

If I am reading this right, the positive side of the coil gets the ign wire (power from the ign switch) and the carb choke coil. the negative side of the coil should go to the points and there may well be a tach connected there too. Make sure it's wired properly and remove the tach wire until you get spark, the tach can short the points out too.

If it's not wired properly, all the tuneup parts added will still not produce a spark.

If it ran before and he hasnt changed wiring around to tach and all then forget the wiring and go back to the basics!

As stated above do a good tune-up / points condensor and if need cap and rotor /wires . it most likely hasnt been maintenanced and could use it.

fix problem 1 before opening another can of worms...

then if it will not run the wiring may need to be sorted out !

I'm all for complete tuneups, but I would think one should be able to at least get the motor to start and run on it's own, I know I could. Points were still factory installed even into the 90's. no need to convert to electronic it wont fix a thing.

Ground wires can corrode or get knocked loose.

Get a dwell meter and crank engine over to see if you have close to proper dwell. This will tell you a lot of info right there. If you don't get any reading, change the points and set the dwell to spec.

I had a similar problem with my 351 last year. It was a bad condenser in my case. (The little metal can in the distributor). I have a new electronic ignition kit that I'm going to put in this spring.

Windsor, Cleveland's were never used in marine applications. File the points? Ok, then do a proper tune up after your done mucking about. ;)

Maybe not factory.........a friend of mine has a speedboat with a 351 cleveland in it out of a 72 grand torino............it outruns anything on the lake...............
