351 Mercruiser wont start.

OK i have nothing when i turn the key. I have tried jumping the starter direct from the battery and nothing but a dead short. I just replaced the starter cause it was bad. Still nothing. I know its a dead short but cant seem to locate it any help would be appreciated . Thanks

How do you know it's a dead short? If it's just because the engine doesn't turn over, maybe the engines locked up? Can you turn it by hand? Could also be the drive. If you can't turn the engine by hand, pull the drive first to make sure it's not the problem.

yes you can crank over by hand. So i got the boat from a guy that was trying to re-wire it and i think he has some wires crossed. I have a yellow and white wire both coming from the key switch. from there the yellow goes to the solenoid located on a bracket on top left of engine. the white one ties into the electric choke and coil which it turns brown there.
what year? What model? Where is the soleonid located?

If you jumpered the battery directly to the starter post, it should have cranked. You need to verify what you did. Dollow the diagram Don S provided to ensure the starter and starter solenoid are properly wired.
