Found a used '91 MasterCraft Tri-Star (un-seen)with a cracked block, 351. I just happen to have a balanced and blueprinted 302 that I built for my Mustang in the garage. What type of problems am I looking at by trying to put the 302 in?

Distributor
Exhaust

Are aluminum heads an issue on a boat? What kind of compression is excessive for a boat motor? The motor is set-up for around 390-400 crank HP @ 5600 rpm/10 to 1 compression. I would likely trade out cams to get the power down in the 4k-5k territory and maybe knock down the compression.

Oh, believe it or not, fuel consumption is an issue.

Re: 351 to 302?

Distributor, intake manifold, and the crank pulley & harmonic damper(3bolts vs. 4 bolts)... Othrwise, everything else will bolt right up.. exhaust, motor mounts, starter, bell housing, and most accessory brackets, all same for 302W/351W...

Aluminum heads or anything else aluminum for that matter... Aluminum's not a problem in freshwater but saltwater will eat it up in a hurry...

Cam... Off idle thru midrange (1000-4000rpm) is where you need power.... I run a oem stock 5.0 mustang hydraulic roller cam in my 21' openfisherman and it works quite well...

300 hp and 5000rpm is about the max that the Borg/Warner 71-C transmission (which you likely have) will handle....

I also ran a stock 199? 302/5.0 mustang engine in a Supra TS6m straight inboard, which is very similar to mastercraft, and was extreemly pleased with it's performance.. Put my old "marine" 351 to shame... 50mph and would pull two barefooters up from a deepwater start with no problem.. Good fuel economy too..

Doesn't the Windsor have a slightly taller deck than the 289/302? Could be a slight issue with the exhaust, I don't know how they are plumbed on that boat. Hopefully won't be a big issue.

Tom
