I have a 351 and it needs a new starter. Is the marine the same as the automotive?
Im traveling from Montana to Minnesota where can I find one between there?
I hope its just a bad connection or dead battery, I haven't looked into it yet. Im sure ill find more problems to be continued...

NO it is not the same. A marine starter is intrinsically safe where the automotive one is not. Check connections, solenoids, and shift intrupt first. A more cost effective way to go if you need a starter would be to have yours rebuilt. Any good boat supply store should be able to get a starter for you (or even NAPA or the like can order it for you).

Could be a bad starter relay if you just get a click or nothing. On my 351's it's mounted on the back starboard side to the left of the harnesses

Re: 351

thanks, i will not be able to check anything out till this weekend. i am two states away from it. its hard for me to think its the starter as well with the age and amout of hours. i would assume bad connection. but who knows till i get there.

Re: 351

i traced the starter problem back to the selinoid, cheap fix. but moving on to the next problem. the distributor was a pile of rust. i replaced all the parts in it. now not knowing anything about points ignition i have a few simple questions.
do i mount the point so it fully closes or do i leave a gap with a feeler guage?
does the cap just hold the rotor down?
when i took the old rotor off there was somthing like steel wool between it and the shaft, necessary?

whats a good site to buy boat parts off of?
i went to napa and its 286$ for the gasket kit, thought they were a bit high. they could have had it in a few days though. figured it would be a fairly common kit seeing so many 351s in boats.
amazing in the price difference of auto gaskets vs. marine. napa only wanted 77 for the auto, wish i could just use those

Ayuh,... That's the problem,...
There ain't very many 351 Fords in boats...
Mercruiser dropped 'em in the late 70s...
Volvo dropped 'em in the mid-90s...
Only a few oddball marinizer's are using 'em today...

Just wait til ya gotta buy Manifolds for it,...
