I need to know the year and the mixture for this motor I have been reading alot on here but nothing about this motor. The model # is RDS-21-B I also have the serial # 1951142 any other info would be great. Just bought the motor and new to the whole boating thing I got a 14' fiberglass and its just something to fish off of. I didn't want anything fancy just a old fishing boat so any info would help out alot thanks

RDS-21B is a 1959 35hp Johnson. The powerhead incorporates "all" needle, roller, and/or ball bearings. As such, it can safely use the 50/1 mixture.

mmmyep! i have this exact motor, along with the "desireable" options, electric start AND and generator. like it a lot. i bought it knowing nothing about boating, but it was too good to pass up. fortunately for me, the seller was a straight shooter, and it was a "runner" right from the day i brought it home. used it all last summer, salt and fresh.

didn't know know _anything_ about what you said above joe, with respect to the needle bearings and correct oiling. the decal inside the engine cover says to use regular 30 weight motor oil at 25:1! ouch! i've always used proper marine outboard oil, but i think the old decal is interesting.

If you're running it wide open, I'd stick to the 24:1 mix. I have a 57 Lark and use it for trolling alot and slow speeds - here you can get by with 50:1 but use the more modern TC-W3 oil rather than the old SAE30. Won't foul out the plugs as easily. Better yet, keep two gas tanks handy: one with each oil mix.

Peter..... Yes, those old decals are interesting but they pertain to lubricating agents that existed before modern lubricants came into existence. Use only a high quality brand of TCW-III 50/1 oil. My recommendations originate from OMC bulletins, factory representatives, and personal experience pertaining to the 50/1 recommendation. However, you will have to make the final judgement call in that area.

as Joe said this is a personal, judgement call. but running TC-W3 smokes less, whether you are running 24/1 or 50/1, also synthectics smoke even less. i have always ran 24/1 TC-W3 on my motors prior to 1965.

Re: 35h super sea horse

id stick with 24/1 cause i believe that some of that oil leaks out of the exhaust to theoretically help it idle better.

u might get away with it at idle but anything above 24/1 is needed.

nothing wrong about having it smoke. use the synthectics. if u dont like that(the smoking) then come talk with me and i will offer a motor removal for free:D:p (just kidding)
