35HP Evinrude Wiring

I just bought a 1979 35HP Evinrude Model 35953A. Motor looks rough but it has good compression. Anyways the seller pulled it off his rotting boat and decided the easiest way to remove it would be to just cut the wire harness at the motor... I traced the wire harness back to a plug. The wires going into the plug from the motor are in bad condition and somebody in the past has made several repairs to the wires. Instead of buying a wire harness I am just going to make one by wiring the switch terminals directly to the individual components. The existing wire harness has five wires and I need help determining what is what and where to land the wires on the starter switch. Looking at parts and found that the Sierra MP39760 starter switch will do the job. Check out my pictures I labeled the wires on the plug 1-5 and included a diagram of the switch terminals, all pictures have comments for them. I need to know where to land these 5 wires on the switch terminals M, B, M, C, I, and S. The switch has six terminals, I think one goes directly to the battery which is why there were only 5 in the wire harness? Any help is welcomed.

A pox on people that cut the harness instead of simply unplugging it. Anyhow, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send you the wiring diagram.

BTW, I just yesterday received a new Sierra switch and the wiring connections illustration on the back of the blister card was a mirror image of what the actual switch layout is. So verify what you have.

F_R did you get my PM?

Is the metal plate containing the model and serial number still attached to the port transom bracket?

Removing or destroying that plate and cutting the wiring harness is the preferred method of some who have a habit of permanently borrowing outboards, forgetting to ask the owners permission.

F_R ok I got your email, thank you very much. Looking at the diagram you sent me and my pictures of the motor with the wires labeled 1-5 I think I have determined where everything goes. I am not installing a tach so I should not have a wire landing on the A terminal on the switch correct? I am attaching a picture of what I have came up with after looking at the diagram you sent me.

Looks good. The A terminal could also be used for other things, in different applications. But you are correct in your case it would be used for accessories that would only be powered when the key is on (tach, gas gauge, etc.)

I went back and erased the comment I made about the switch I bought. It is marked correctly, just not a true representation on the instruction card, compared to how it actually looks at first glance.

Ok so I wired up everything and got the motor running. But I have an issue. The starter stays running when the key is in the “run” position. Possible I landed a wire wrong? If so which wires should I switch around? Or is it the starter solenoid?

Check the voltage at the two small terminals on the starter solenoid. There should be no voltage on either one unless the key is in Start position. And in start position, voltage on only one of them. If incorrect, double check your wiring.

The switch terminal labels were a little different than the diagram. Turns out I landed the starter wire on the accessory terminal. Got it all worked out, thanks for the help. I finished replacing most of the wires and cleaning up the motor.
