After putting my new to me 1986 35hp motor on the boat and taking out for a test spin i found that the motor is only turning at about 4200 rpm on a 16ft. alum. jon boat by myself. The prop is brand new 14 pitch prop. Does this sound like the motor is sick or do i just need to go down in pitch? The motor is also making a loud pang panging sound under throttle. I have never heard this sound before in an outboard. I would also appreciate it if someone could take a picture and show me the correct throttle and shift linkage points where they hook to the motor. The place im talking about is where the black plastic things with the hole in them connect and how far i should have them threaded in or out.

Re: 35hp Mercury

I can't help with throttle specifics but the cables need to be adjusted so the
shift and throttle are right.I assume it shifts right you just need to be sure the carb butterflies open all the way.
I sure wouldn't drive it till you solve that noise. You might try rocking the fly wheel back and forth should be quiet.Pull the plugs and put a dowel on the piston. with piston at the top of the stroke rock the flywheel feel for slop
when changing direction.Could also be something hitting under the flywheel.
If the boat has floor/decking, full controls and other gear the 14 may be too much.but be sure all else is right before making any changes. The antvent plate(just above the prop)should be approximately even with the bottom of the boat.

Re: 35hp Mercury

I just took the motor to a mechanic , but he was booked up till june. But he was nice enough to look over my motor in his driveway. Compression cheacked out good 180 and 172. He also checked for slop in flywheel but found none. So he put motor on muffs and when it made the sound he said it was my motor mounts are shot and making all the racket. Is this something to worry about? He said to replace them would cost alot of money, cause of all the work. He also tried to adjust my shift control but said there wasnt enough of the black plastic end thing to make a perfect neutral, it still makes a clicking noise when you turn prop by hand in neutral.
