Hi, have just bought a 35hp 1983 Evinrude motor attached to a shetland 18ft..
Have browsed this excellent forum for many questions already (oil from the lower hole, propellor play etc) but have some queries I couldn't find answers to..
1. there is a three pin socket on the side of the engine just by the fuel inlet. Is this for charging a battery? if so what do I need to connect to it to get a DC charging voltage, also can it be used to power a tacho? is it possible to get a connector to fit the socket without resorting to breaking out the wiring?
2. reverse is very stiff to engage when running (and stopped, whilst turning the prop) - I have tested the cable linkage off the shifter and this is fine, also if I lift up the sprung indexing thing above the shifting mechanism at the top of the engine it shifts very well indicating (I think) that the LU is ok. Is there some sort of interlock that prevents reverse being engaged or does some of this indexing system need greasing?
3. After running in a trash can for around 10 mins the water is quite oily. Is this normal? I am running 50:1 fuel
il..maybe should wait until it has had a proper run don't know what previous owner was running.
4. I plan to change the spark plugs / impellor and LU oil before hitting the salt water. Is there anything else to check / change before getting on the water? Want to give myself the best chance of not breaking down with a 40 year old boat and 25 year old engine!
Lots of questions. Any comments gratefully received (first boat, first marine engine experience!) Expecting manual in post soon...
Regards David
