Okay I just wrote this whole life summary(see below) when I realized that I had just found this site to search for advice on an outboard motor. Just need some advice on what i think is an overheating and possibly warped head problem. Fired up granpa's old boat, went up river, started to come back, smelled hot, stopped to investigate, wouldn't start again. It was awful easy to turn the flywheel when investigating. Thanks -stranded on an island... not really...

Howdy folks! I'm new here, so first off HI! Now the reason I"m here is because I have recently obtained my grandpa's old Shasta boat (not sure of year or model). It's a little runabout that he spent some of his last days fixin up, I hauled it to his house for him and he went to work. He put a little 35 horse johnson on it, since the other one didn't want to work right, and ran it quite a bit. He passed away in 04, and my cousin was willed the boat. He ran it a bit for fishing and such, then it sat for about two years. I went and recovered it on Tues. to start cleaning it out. Got it all cleaned out and washed off. new battery installed and fresh gas. Got it running in the driveway, (in an old garbage can of course) and took it and my daughter to the river. After determining it to be sea-worthy, we hopped in for a little ride, up the river we went. Got up to some smoother water, let the kid drive a boat for the first time, pulled up to a beach, skipped some rocks, then headed home. Noticed the smell of heat, when we stopped to check it out it wouldn't start again. Had to call my incle to tow us home.

Well you might have burned it up. Or at least got so hot that it blew the head gasket. You obviously have to check the compression to see if there is a problem. You also have to fix that water pump--something you should have done BEFORE you overheated it. Hindsight is a great teacher.

Darn that hindsight!!! That's kinda what I was thinkin, now... since I'm more of a car/truck/jeep engine guy, is this an "easy" rebuild. In the sense that it's do-able buy someone who's torn apart V-8's and such?
