My guess the water pump wasn't fine. How did you check it?Seizing motors is never good,so you need to know why .If it's an old twin cylinder, you may still get some use out of it.More tolerance in old motors.

You are mixing oil with gas ?

DHP

Re: 3hp eveinrude run without water!!!

you cannot never ever run an outboard with out water.
thats why your motor overheats

retorqe the cylinderheads and squirt some tcwIII
into the sparkplug holes.and turn the flywheel to lube the walls up.
should go easy with the plugs out.(and waterpump impellor burned.

if you did run it without water replace the waterpump before you start it because chances are waterpump impeller is melted.

if you did run it with the mufs on or in a barel and it still overheated replace waterpump and tstats, waterdeflectors.
make shure all the passages are open.

and i think after your motor seized up you should do a compression check also to see if everything is well.

good luck

A '51 should be a 3.3hp? If this is a '52- 3hp there's something I think you should check out.

Hard to kill a 3hp!
Anyway, there's two parallel cooling circuits on the 3hp engines and often one will get blocked while the other flows freely causing overheats. Have a look at this diagram:
1t1vsk
Most of the cooling water follows the blue line but some is let into the jacket around the cylinders & head (red) through a pair of drilled holes. The bottom one can't be seen from that angle, but it's on the bottom of the lowest point of the water jacket, a little to the left. It's acessable from the bottom of the powerhead too.
Those holes sometimes get blocked and the waterjacket overheats. You wouldn't know about it since you'll still see plenty of water coming out the idle relief holes. If the head seems to be getting very hot, this is likely blocked.

thnks for the info I will check and make sure it's cooling right.
It still runs good and I think it's cooling now there is water comeing from the tale tales and i can touch the head whell it's running I will put a new carb kit on it and a new pump .
This is a nice little motor I only paid $40 for it. :)
It had bad gas in it and had some water in the lower unit but with a little care it is alive once agin thank you for your help.
do you think flushing it would clear any clogs?

Like I said before, even if it's clogged you'll get good tell-tales due to the bypass circuit.

The engine's a steal at $40. If you've never had one of these before, they're great little dependable eggbeaters. They used the same basic design up into the '80s with a fairly large change in '69 when they rerated it to 4hp.

I don't know about flushing clearing any clogs, the engines I work with are all salt-water engines, and the clogs grow into massive rock-like calcium deposites which must be cleared with a drill bit. 'Course that means removing at least the powerhead and the exhaust cover for access, although I usually remove the head as well.
