I just bought a 3hp Johnson model JW-16. Can any one help me out on some info for this motor, fuel mixture, year is there a manuel available ext... They told me it hasn't been used for 2 years, but turns over great and has a spark. Is there anything I need to service before I try to start it? Are these motors generaly good?

It's a 1960 3 hp engine.Fuel mix ratio is 24:1.You can get a service manual at the bottom of this page by clicking on manuals.make sure to change the gearcase oil and observe its condition when draining.

never had experience with that motor so couldn't say wether their any good or not but johnson normally has a good product.they may have the manuel for it here on Iboats. if not try www.marinemotorparts.com they normaly find whatever i need and are reasonably priced...normally.I would suggest you check compression, replace the plugs, clean the carbs, check fuel lines for clogs or leaks.change out the lower unit oil,and check the impeller.many other things i could go into but a manuel is still the best info you can find.good luck and congrats on the new aquisition.

If the ignition coils are cracked, you will want to replace them, since the slightest moisture will kill your spark. Plus, they probably will arc over at higher rpms, giving you a miss.
Fortunetly, I belive it's easy to inspect them on your motor. If you remove the three screws in the top of the flywheel, and remove the two plates, there'll be some holes you can look at them through. The old pink ones are really prone to cracking with age. Be critical, you can buy new ones for $15-$20 each.
Oh, if yours has a built in tank, you should know there's a fuel filter above the brass nut above the shutoff valve. They get clogged and cause no end of confusion.
The very best thing you can do is follow ob's advice and get yourself a service manual.
These are beyond good motors. I was just looking at a pair of neglected/abused ones that are still in service. They are very nearly indestructable.
