3hp Johnson Reving problem

I recenty purchased a 1966 3hp Johnson. The motor starts fine and idles fine. It will not rev up past idle. It stalls out if I leave it near full throttle. It did start to rev after I closed the gas supply line and began to run it out of gas. The motor has been sitting around for a few years. I am not sure it is electrical or carburator related. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Thanks, Pat

Pat,

welcome to Iboats

Take a look at the timing advance plate, make sure it is moving smoothly with no binding, you may need to remove the gas tank and side covers to be able to inspoect this.

If the timing advance moves freely then loks like carb clean rebuild time as the high speed jet may be clogged.

any more questions come on back and ask, lots of experience here and good people willing to answer questions.

You have a stuck or sunk float in the carb, I think, Pat.

Definitely a fuel problem. Picks up RPM as it leans out when running out of fuel is the kicker - classic symptom. Take the carb apart and clean it... and check the float as JB suggested...
