I recently bought this non running Sea king three montgomery ward.
Model # GG18800A Serial #36X866382. Its off white with a tank on the top. I changed gas and plug. I got her to fire up a few times. I push the prime/lean knob to prime. She fired up and ran for a good 5 min in the bucket i had to shut her down cuz it was late. What ratio gas mix is to be used? i figured 24:1What year is this motor?. Does the lower unit need to be lubed on these if so where at? Does the carb come off in one piece? Would u then soak it in Carb cleaner? Is it ok to run the motor without the side covers on the lake?Does the tank have a fuel filter? Should that be cleaned or replaced?Thx for your help

Your motor is a 63 the last year if production.
Fuel mix is 24:1 It shares ignition parts with E/J motors of that era.
You should be able to observe the coil through the port on top of the flywheel
If discolored or cracked should be replaced. Gearcase uses grease lubriplate 105 I believe is the current type. You can run without side covers,Carb will come off in one piece. The reed valve is part of the assembly. More to follow

Gotta love those 3hp Gales. I'm always looking for another one.

The float in the carburetor is cork. If too far gone, it can be replaced by a modified Mercury float, available here at iboats. Packing on the needle valve is special, available from Evinrude dealers. Part number 550259. He'll probably have to special order it.

There is a filter screen in the tank. Probably ok unless the tank is gunked up inside.

Water pump impellers are usually swollen by grease leaking out of the lower unit. Brian Wilcox makes them at a decent price. http://www.chrystine.com/impellers/order.html

Barney glad to hear she's running for ya, did you let her idle for a while to get her cleaned up a bit? Maybe some seafoam mixed in will get her running smooth too?

(Barney is my fishing buddy and I just wanted to add that he absolutely stole this motor for $45:D)

Should be a nice fuel-efficient OB and will troll right down to speed easily on my 12' or his 14' tinny.

We should be doing a water test soon(unless he's out right now while I'm at work!:))

Thanks for the help fellas...we got her running a bit and had a nice trip out. The 3hp stalls often so the carbs probably need to be worked on.

Pushed a 14' with 2 guys at 5mph and will be a great trolling motor.

I've got some photos I can post of her in action.

Another update to report...Barney says he removed the carb...soaked it...put it back on...she fires on one pull and doesn't stall anymore.

Sounds like a keeper:)
