I need to tap your expertise for a moment. I have a 3hp sears that is a late 60's early 70's tecumseh that I have been trying to get to run this past weekend. It has been sitting for 15 yrs that I know of with bad gas and all. It does run, but like s##t. Cleaned the carb and tank with new plug and all that. I need to locate a carb kit and need to know if it has an impellor for lower end cooling because the engine is air cooled. It looks as if it has a pisser but nothing is coming out of it. I need to know if you gents have any links to parts avalability before I start strewing parts all over the garage. This is a suckup project for the father inlaw so any help I will be eternally grateful.
Regards.

You may get parts on www.sears.com Go under the parts section and type in your model# EXAMPLE 298.***X

It is air cooled and the pisser you see is the exhaust ports. It doesn't have a water pump.

The carbs on these things go annually and always get out of ajustment.

I would spray some starter fluid in the carb and run it a a slightly high idle until warmed up. After that, ajust the idle screw until it runs just above dying out.

I always notice on mine that each time I use it, I have to turn the idle screw up a bit until warm and then back it down.

Good luck

Thanks for the input.
I tried everything and more that you said. I'm pretty sure the carb needs a kit, gaskets, needle and seat etc. It's very unstable, somtimes runs halfway decent then will die and have to use starting fluid to get it going. I'm hoping I can get more to a kit than just gaskets if they are available. The idle screw does little or nothing so I know the idle port has crap in it. My main concern was the outdrive if it had an impellor or not. It's a good motor for it's size and saved my arse once. It's just been neglected and I'm paying for it now. I appreciate the input.

Re: 3hp Sears & Roebuck

fishthebay, I just looked at the parts diagrams for my '68 Sears 3.5 hp air cooled and it DOES have a water pump (tried to find a price for the impeller alone, but it showed me the whole pump assembly in the $50s instead!). But maybe some of their other models don't have one.

Hi GarageGuy: I have a 1974 Sears Tecumseh/Eska 7.0hp engine which is probably similar to the one you have. The water pump on these engines is extremely important and needs to work properly or you will fry the engine as surely as if it were totally water-cooled. The water is used to cool the exhaust gases and the lower leg; otherwise the whole lower leg rapidly gets to frying pan temp, and the air-cooled powerhead can't compensate for this. Mine uses a 1"diaX1/2" high impeller - got it thru PartsDirect.com and after I got it I compared with a 1" impeller used on late model small Mercs and it was the same and lots cheaper. Measure your impeller and compare with the Sierra aftermarket unit and you might save some bux. My old 3.5hp Chrysler/West Bend uses a water scoop tube behind the prop to cool the lower leg & has no impeller, but most of these so called "air-cooled" engines have a water pump. One more thing; the water pump on my Sears only works when the motor is in gear, so if yours has a shift, this may also be the case. Good luck!
