3M confusion???

According to a post on Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics), 3M 5200 sealant is NOT sticking to stainless steel. I bought a kicker motor and bracket for my glass boat. I need to drill holes through the transom to install the 4 stainless steel bolts to hold the bracket. I looked for 3M 4200 in case I ever needed to remove the bracket but could not find it. I got some 3M 5200 at WalMart. Now I am afraid to use it?????<br /><br />I did a search on this board and never found a straight authoritative answer about sticking to SS? If I put in the bolts and the 3M 5200 does not stick, wouldn't water seep into the wood beneath the gel coat?<br /><br />What is the best solution? I figure those of you who restore boats have the best answer for this question.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />McPhee<br />

I've never had any problem with 3M 5200 not sticking to SS. Has always worked just fine for me. Chief

Not too long ago I installed my Smart Tabs using the 5200 on the backside on the tab hinge as I figured it to be a better sealant than the tape. I also used it on the screws into the hull. This is Stainless material and so are the screws. Granted before curing 100% (which takes a while with 5200, maybe even better than a week),I could peel some off of the screws that oozed out but the seal between the hull, the screws and the hinge was 100%.

I haven't had any problems with 5200. Just make sure that the metal surface is free of oil/grease. <br /><br />Recently, I have used Goop's marine adheasive/sealer. It is also clear, really holds well, and can be used above/below the waterline. I like it. It too is intended for a permanent bond between pieces. I don't know yet if it is as tough as 5200, but so far so good.

K-D, I was the one that posted that issue re the S/S and 5200. This was my own experience, and I'm not saying it will not stick, but just a word of caution. Others swear by this stuff and I admit that it sticks like nothing I have seen before to fiberglass, aluminum, wood etc but it did not stick to the S/S or brass for me.<br /><br />I am very meticulous at most things I do and there is no question in my mind that the surfaces were absolutely clean. The surfaces were scuffed up then cleaned thoroughly with acetone. I will not be using it anymore where S/S or brass is involved. For other applications it is remarkable, in my opinion. Take it for what its worth.
