Last May I purchased a sailboat. During the final stages of this transaction the through hull fitting for the engine water intake was rebedded using 3M Strip Caulk. The previous owner told me to replace this when the boat was hauled for the winter.
Today he called me and reminded me to replace the 3M Strip Caulk with 5200 or 4200. The boat is still in the water, and I would like to wait until next fall to have her hauled.
The boat is completely dry with no seepage around the through haul. The only reference I could find on the Internet to 3M Strip Caulk being used below the waterline was by a guy who had used in it in 1981 and realized 20 years later that he had never replaced what was supposed to be a temporary job.
Should I:
a) drive the boat into shallow water tonight to prevent her sinking
b) have her hauled ASAP
c) keep an eye on her and replace the caulk if there is a leak
d) replace the caulk next fall
e) don't worry about it
f) none of the above
Thanks,
mrmac
