I had posted about my 4 HP merc a few weeks ago (starvation problem)--an update was requested to heregos--with a few additional questions:

I rebuilt the fuel pump (checks, gaskets and diaphragm) as well as the float bowl (gasket, needle valve and seat). The fuel pump was definitely a major contributor to my problem as she will run much better now--no need to constantly pulse the priming bulb.

BUT--in the test tank she will still quit on me--especially at high and low speed. Also, at high speed she will slow down/speed up. The gas was still leaking through the vent on the flow cover even witht he rebuild but I adjusted the levers and tat seems to have stopped that problem.

My questions:

1. Can old gas be a simple cause of this problem? I am working off of the tank form last season--the gas is 4-5 months old and was stabilized.
2. I notice a bunch of white stuff on the surface of the test tank water when I am done--I assume it is oil form the gas mixture--it that normal?
3. The float does not appear to be saturated--I assume as long as it floats it is good right? Or can it appear to be good but really be saturated?
4. What do you mean by "rich" and "lean". What are the indications of each?

I just do not know where else to look for this problem. She runs fine. starts fine. Just will not keep running unless it is at mid speeds and even then it is touchy.

Sorry so long--thanks for any replies!
