Was given a 1 J Champion that is just like one my dad had when I was in grade school. This one has been rode hard and put away wet. The piston is seized and the cylinder is a rust bucket. I need a piston, a rod with needle bearings, wrist pin, and a cylinder/waterjacket. Or better yet a good power head. Also could use a magnito magnet and a transom clamp bracket. Anyone have any parts for this one??????????

Those little Champs are great motors. Try a wanted ad in the free classifieds at www.aomci.org and keep an eye on the auction site, they come up there frequently for not much scratch. There's a nice pix of a fully restored one at acmeoutboards.com but I think his paint scheme is different from the factory originals.

Re: 4.2 Champion

Right tmcalavy on the colors, I can remember from my 4th grade year. My dad's 1 J was new. Everything was silver except the lettering, knobs and decals which were med blue. I am 70 now and have always loved outboards. I have 7 now. I remember while vacationong in Minnesota, a guy had worked most of the day on his Martin and couldn't get it to run. He rowed like mad to the middle of the lake, stood up on a seat and heaved it into the lake. I sure wish I could have snatched it from him. Where is the auction sit you refer to?

Ebay...sorry moderators if I violate policy naming it. There's at least one complete 1J on there now and some parts from a 2K, a very close cousin to your 1J. Most of the champs I see on the auction site sell for less than $100. Good luck restoring it. Might also check for a local AOMCI chapter near you on their club/chapter page...most of their local clubs have swap/trade meets year round. Wish our TX chapter was more active.

I don't know about eBay. I found a power head for what I believe is a 1 J and have tried 5/6 time to contact the seller through the sellers site as well as through eBay with 0 results. (I had a few questions) The power head went off bid with no bids. Anyway. I have found all the parts I need for a restoration through Champhotrod. (Champion guru)

tmcalavy, that's it, thats his E-mail address, just "champhotrod". He has been sort of busy lately, usually answers rifgt back but has been a little slow lately. He seems to have a lot Champs and parts. At one time had about 200 6 ND motors. He is a streight shooter and knows all the history of Champion Motors.

Re: 4.2 Champion

My dad had one just like that, don't know what year it was? but it was silver & blue also, it was his portable fishing boat motor. The shame of it was, we bought a 14' "skimmer" brand plywood rowboat, and after a few times out on my own with it, I think I must have forgotten to put oil in it, and it siezed up, I didn't have the heart to tell him, because I wasn't sure, but I think he knew. I was rowing for awhile after that, till we got our next outboard boat a 16' Thompson with a 30hp evinrude, the boat I grew up with.

My uncle (dad's brother) had a newer, bigger Champion, it was modern looking, and all blue not sure of the horsepower though? I know they produced a 16hp racing engine back then that was faster then the old Mercs, I think it was a Champion Blue Streak.

When I E-mail him I only put Champhotrod in the address box. Works for me. Anyway, will give you name and phone number.

Re: 4.2 Champion

I too have a Blue Champion 16.5 Mod # 6 ND. Champhotrod reworked the power head for me. It was my dads when I was a kid. He gave it to a second cousin of mine and he ran it on a hydro till it wouldn't run any more. He called me to see if I wanted it and of course I did. I got it to run OK but it wouldn't idle worth a hoot. Turned out it was a worn center main. Somehow I came across Champhotrod on the net. This thing runs like a raped ape in a jungle fire! I have it fully restored except for the decals. It's sort of fun to let people think it is a 7.5. It sure doesn't look like a 16.5.
