Which is preferred?
What are the advantages of each?
Which one get's better fuel economy; @ WOT? Cruising?
Which one is faster?

HP ratings are close, but I'm used to having OB's so I'm interested in the powerband characteristics of both.

Thanks,
Kevin

THe V-6 is lighter.

The V-8 has a slightly better idle.

The V-6 and V-8 are very torquey.

The V-8 MAY have slightly better resale.

The V-6 may have slightly better fuel economy-not much.

What are the HP ratings for these engines. I've seen 4.3's have from 180-210 but I don't know the 5.0's rating. I've seen 220 hp from a 5.0, is that a 4bbl or 2bbl?

220 from a 5 litre is a 2 bbl model, the 5 litre EFI do 260/270 hp depending whether Merc Or Volvo.
Given 2 engines of 220hp, one being 4.3 litres and the other being 5.0 litres. The larger engine will have more torque. All things equal top speed with light loads will be much the same, the smaller engine will just be slower getting there. As the load increases, both accelleration and top speed will suffer more on the 4.3 than the 5 litre. I myself, will choose torque over hp in a boat
