Time to replace clutch dogs. Gonna leave the gear work to a pro (I hope:)), by replacing either the lower unit or the full outdrive.
Drive is probably 1999. Upper unit works great. full drive reinstalled last year.

Engine is a 2004 4.3 Alpha I Gen II. The original was also a 4.3, but was replaced with a Repower 4bbl 4.3 engine. S/N: 90004747
Drive SN: 0L102679 1.63R is stamped in, but 1.81R is scrawled on the drive in two places (see photo) - (kind of looks like 1.61, but it's 1.81).

Any recommendations welcomed!
- specific part number?
- replacement (or remanufactured?)
- brands?
- sources?

Thank you!

Time to replace clutch dogs.

Ayuh,..... How'd ya come to that conclusion,..??

If it's chatterin', ya probably need a new lower shift cable, or possibly just adjustin' it,.....

Purchased 2 years ago. Had it checked out and it was in good shape except "clutch dogs were getting worn - may want to replace in a few years".

If by "chattering" you mean it grinds unless i jam it into gear quickly (and take more throttle than a year or two ago)... then yea, it's chattering. but once in gear, there is no chattering.

Shifting into forward or reverse seemed to get a little more punchy over time, and seems to take too much throttle to get it into gear. I've been expecting this job to hit about now, and last time out, I'm not sure the prop was full disengaging when returning to neutral (had a pull the boat quickly and couldn't full diagnose at the time). So with these symptoms and expectation to replace lower unit... i was headed for the replacement job. Step 1? Thanks :)

Sounds more like a shift cable to me. Clutch dogs don't really wear out often unless you sit there and let it chatter all the time. My 1983 had the originals in it.

Reading my own description... it does to me, too.
I will read up on maint/adjustment of shift cable. Thanks

Thanks all. I have my trusty SELOC manual....with a decent section on adjusting the lower shift cable. Any recommendations on alternate manual, procedure, shortcuts, tips, etc?

Success! Finally, I think...

I performed the adjustment per the factory Shop Manuals. The rotating "brass" barrel on the "stud" is actually plastic. The pivot point on the throttle cam was in the middle, so I moved it to the bottom. I thought that i adjusted the barrel properly, but when I got it into the water, I was not able to depress the throttle-only release. So attempted to re-adjust, but frankly, I thought i did it correctly the first time, so I wasn't sure what to change. I spun the "brass" piece a few turns out and remounted it.. Then the throttle-only button worked, so back in the water.... Seemed to shift very smoothly - definitely an improvement.

My assumption:
Too tight - no throttle only. ??
Too loose - not engaging lower unit properly?

Perhaps its actually adjusted now

dang this post is old. So I was pulling people with the boat, I was shifting back and forward. Then the transmission stop connecting, it means, it didn't connect to forward neither reverse. Every time I engaged in forward or reverse, I heard a bit of grinding and it connected, this was the normal when I bought the boat. Now there is no sound and no connection to gear. Any advise please? is a 1993 inboard alpha one. I was trying to remove the propeller axle to inspect the clutch dog but after removing all I can see I can remove, I am not able to pull the axle, Maybe I need to disconnect the lower unit?
Is this a problem with the clutch or cable?
do you have have video or photos of how to inspect what ever you think could be wrong? and how to removed the propeller axle?
