1993 4.3 alpha one gen2. Just had major service done-bellows, lower shift cable, impeller, propshaft carrier. Been having shifting problems .

The interrupt seems to be working, but I' ve gone back twice now and it's never right.

Reverse is fine, neutral to drive sometimes ok. Sometimes a grind before engaging, and sometimes it engages the sounds like it engages again(dble clunk). What should the shop be looking for? They said my main cable was ok. Sometimes it will stay in gear till I wiggle the shifter. Help! Lol

Short shift cable may be going bad. Crud (corrosion) packed behind the shift arm.

Yes I am, I've have the boat 3 years, never had a problem. Could it be gear wear?

Ayuh,... Anything is Possible, but I'd sooner think it's still a Cable/ controller issue,...

Re: 4.3 Alpha one shifting problems

Had a similar problem, but mine would stall whenever I went into reverse (not fun trying to dock). I replaced my shift cable because it was binding (caused the interrupt to stall the engine completely). There was also a fair amount of crud behind the shift arm in the out drive. A few minor adjustments on the water after the install and she's running better than ever. Since your out drive was repaired already you shouldn't have any build-up already and may just need an adjustment. A google search for alpha one shift adjustments will lead you to a forum thread in this site I believe that has pictures of what/how to adjust.

Re: 4.3 Alpha one shifting problems

ponchoman - I recently had a similar problem with my 4.3 staying in gear after shifting to neutral from either forward or reverse. If you look at the shift interrupter switch assembly, is the y-bracket moving freely? In other words are you able to engage the shift interrupter switch by physically moving the y-bracket? I had found where the y-bracket was not aligned and actually stuck to the surface of the interrupter switch...jostled the y-bracket, it popped back in place and has been working as designed ever since.

I took it back to the shop, they are looking at that switch as well. They said it was working last time.

Turns out the interrupt was intermittent. Sometimes it worked sometimes not. They replaced it. We'll see this weekend!
