Hi guys. i believe im ab to give.lol I have a 4.3 weber 4bbl merc and a ELECTRIC pump in a 18.5 foot bowrider. the situation i have is the motor had sat for ab 1 to 2 years before i bought it. Before i took it to the lake i did all the lube changes along wit fuel filter. Took it out for 2 days...ran excellent...56mph on gps..only run ab 130 to 140 degrees( so the gauges said) could be wrong. next day checked the oil smells like fuel.

i did some more reading on here ab carbs sitting and leaking all the gas out of the carb when it was sittin. So i got a new carb. the 1409. along with the 4.3 calibration kit which comes with jets and metering rods. I got that put on. Changed the plugs. did a good tune up on the motor so to say. fired right up on the 2nd turn over. ran excellent for the 5 to 10 min i had it runnin to get it tuned right for idle and a few shut off and restarts. shut it off and waited til the next day to finish up because it was gettin dark. went out today checked the oil jus out of curiosity and wat do you know.....same fuel smell . not as strong as b4 but still a good fuel smell. pulled a plug... the plug looks very very light brown the plug looks excellent besides the wet look that it has. and it smells strongly like fuel.lol

jus to sum up wat i have is 4.3 electric pump, 1409 carb with 4.3 calibration. new oil n filter, new fuel filter, new plugs (set to right plug gap), and the choke is NOT stayin closed. it works properly. good compression. motor does not smoke and it only has 73 hours... what could be my problem? i have run out of options to the fix i think. lol thanks ahead of time.

What are you working on? make year serial number etc. See the adults only sticky at the top. There is also a fuel system test there. Generically, an electric fuel pump can over power the needle valve, but I would think it would flood rather than run 50 mph...

1995 Donzi 182 Medallion 4.3LX Alpha 1 gen 2. dont have serial # on hand but can get them if need be.

my question is ...all my experience with cars an such point to this..... if a motor is runnin rich it will have a dark black plug and if it is really rich it will be a shiny black or wet. this is the right color and is wet with fuel. which i would think that the fuel is gettin into the engine after shut off right?

Did I miss where you changed your oil? If you haven't, before you run your motor again, I would.

I had a similar problem (either fuel sender problem, or float got stuck). Carb was rebuilt, sensor was replaced. However on changing the oil, we got 3 gallons of a fuel/oil mixture out. Luckily, it wasn't run like that.

Changed oil, ran it with the muffs, then changed oil again. It runs like a champ now.

Re: 4.3 fuel issue.

I had that part, and rebuilding the carb, done by a local mechanic. Fuel sensor was how he described the part, but it was actually the accelerator pump, part number 3302-9655. Hope this helps.
