Hi all,
I have a 1989 larson with a 4.3 liter merc. Seams to be running well but every time I go out I get a black residue on the stern. I also notice a strong fuel smell at idle and just putting around. Kinda like I get from a two stroke. I also notice after it is warm and I shut it off, I have to crank it over longer for it to start. Fresh in the water it starts right away. It may idle a bit rough after it has been run also. The boat has a merc carb and is a 2 barrel. The only adjustment I see is in the front. A single screw and spring I believe is a mixing screw? Can this be adjusted? If anyone could help me with adjustments, rebuilds, any help, etc, that would be great.

Check the choke settings. Maybe too rich.
