Ok this isn?t really a problem, but it is really annoying. I have a 1990 Maxum 2100sr 4.3 alpha one. When I go to fill up the gas tank from almost empty here is what happens:

It fills about 10 gallons and then the gas pump handle "releases" sensing back pressure (Tank is only about 1/3 full). I can then put the pump handle in about the half way position and continue to fill it up that way (15 more gallons or so) but it just takes twice as long. Seems like a fuel vent issue to me but I checked it out and everything seems perfect.

It isn?t just this one gas station either I have tried a few.

Anyone ever had this happen or know what could cause it? Like I said it is just annoying not really a problem........I don?t think :)

Im no expert but Im going to say thats normal. It happens to me all the time weather its on the boat or my truck. If I dont let them fall pretty much to empty it does not happen. If it happens to you when you have a 1/3 of a tank, then it might be a problem. Even on my wifes new truck it happens if she lets the fuel level get to low.

Hmmm Ill check that out. I only pull it off the lake when it is low so maybe that is it.

I still haven?t bought one of the fancy portable gas pumps to bring to the boat. Sounds like I have a great excuse to tell the wife so I can buy one :)

Thanks for the reply

The hose between the fuel filler and the tank is the culprit.
Routing of the hose will not let full fuel flow because the hose is either laying flat or curved.

I will check that out. If I remember right it was curved. Is it worth my time to try to shorten it and make it straighter? I can nearly guarantee it is the factory original one and still routed the way it originally came.

I am thinking just leave it and finally buy one of the cart pumps that I can just pull down to the boat. The cart pumps don?t seem to have the same pressure as an actual station pump does anyway.

Thanks for the reply.

When the factory installed that filler hose, they really weren't thinking about filling the tank. Boats I've run into won't take fuel faster than the first notch on the filler nozzle. Filler on the side of the boat (gunwale), tank in the middle of the hull, the filler hose has to lay flat somewhere.

My 89 Baja does this also. Never happened to me in any vehicle, just the boat. Have to pump slow or it will start to come out of the vent nozzle.
