Hello all,
I have searched and read several threads, I understand that the best way to convert the actual strendrive is to replace the transom.
What are the major changes that need to be done to engine. I understand the coupler needs to be changed but is their and other major changes that need to be completed.
The reason I'm asking is I have the opportunity to buy a 1989 Four Winns 180 Horizon but he said the dreaded OMC. The boat will need a complete rebuild and the outdrive is missing. I just trying to decide whether to buy or run.
Thanks for impute.

Thanks for the reply,
That's good news maybe.
I haven't went to see the boat yet, just pic's. I may have to replace the transom in it anyways don't really know yet but I at least know that I have some options.

Re: 4.3 OMC covert to Mercruiser

Hello again,
I didn't want to open a new thread to ask this question.
The question is how can I tell the difference between a Alpha 1 and a Alpha 1 Generation II outdrive. I know I have read it before but I can't find it.
I don't know the year only early 90's and I don't have the serial number.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

Probably the easiest ways to tell is the trailing edge of the skeg is swept back on Gen II and straight down on earlier models.
The Gen II drives also had the upper and lower connected with through bolts (2 each side) where the earlier units used studs and nuts.

When you say "replace the transom" are you talking about the actual WOOD or are you talking about the OMC transom shield/gimbal mount etc?

You won't have many problems putting all the Mercruiser stuff where the OMC stuff went. I did it removing a 460 King Cobra and replacing with a Mercruiser BBC/Bravo

Doing the SEI conversion might be a better choice and could save a fair amount of money.

If you do have to replace the transom because it's rotten, the stringers and floor may be rotten too.

If that's the case, you might be better off finding another boat entirely.

HT32BSX115,
Thanks for the response.
I am very familiar with the work required to replace transom, stringers, and deck.
This boat has a 3 piece transom and I know the center transom is shot.
I'm talking about replacing the entire transom at this point, stringers and deck.
Getting another boat may be the smart move but it's not my boat, and I really enjoy the work. I'm also just helping out a friend.
Thanks
Bob

Well, that's a whole nuther story!

In that case, I would probably plan on a complete OMC to Mercruiser swap after all the wood/fiberglass restoration....

I love the smell of polyester resin!!

Cheers,

Rick
