4.3 Reman

After much deliberation, I think I'm going to go with a 4.3 reman of the same vintage as mine ('88 OMC)

What I am wondering is if it's possible to just add the vortec heads and intake to an older style motor and if it will net any gains, cause any problems?

Anyone done this before or know how it will work out?

Thanks a lot...

Sure that can be done. I believe that puts you in the 205/210 hp ball park with the right cam and a four barrel carb. Changing intakes may also require a throttle cable bracket change.

Yeah, i've thought about that.....also my shift cable bracket mounts to the intake currenty.....I think the only problem would be the angle of the bracket would change on that....I'm sure there's something I can do with that though...

I've also wondered if a 4 brl carb's size would cause problems with the shift bracket....

BTW, Thanks for your help before Reel....your advice was really straightforward and helped me tremendously....just wish the result was a little better :) Motor runs good, but knocks.... I just took a chance that no other damage was done and was wrong.....

Re: 4.3 Reman

JD,

Sorry to hear the news. I would pull the block and take a look see. Just because it knocks doesn't mean it's not any good. Pull it, break it down and take it to a reputable machinist. Have it checked. If it's good, just rebuild the low end. It would be alot cheaper than a reman and you know what you got.
Even if it's no good, I would try to find another block and have it rebuilt ...my way!!! Plus, you go oversize pistons, more HP. Everybodies always trying to increase HP of their marine engine.

I've seen that a lot here.....people just ready to toss their block without having it checked.

Good Luck
