Hey guys, is changing the impeller on an outboard/inboard the same as a pure outboard? It simply is in the lower unit same spot pretty much? My friend has a 1989 merc 4.3 v6 which is overheating and was gonna try and help him.

Re: 4.3 v6 impeller change?? hard or not??

ok - I just finished outdrive service on a 4.3 L Alpha.
Of course I could now do it in half the time but it is really not hard. Depending on the last service,
taking it apart can be nasty but the one thing I will stress is on the reassembly...
Make sure the propeller is engaged with the coupler facing forward. I had to pop her off again to correct this as I really missed that small comment in the manual:)
Good Luck

Strat, Changing the impeller on a alpha 1 gen I is exactly the same as changing the impeller on a merc outboard. My Merc 1500 even uses the same impeller as my '88 4.3LX. The difference is in reinstalling the lower unit of the mercruiser. If you remove just the lower gearcase on the Mercruiser (drain the gear oil first)and replace the impeller (same service procedure as outboard), it is a bit tricky to reinstall. First, make sure controls are in forward. Put a prop on the lower unit and turn it ccw while turning the shifter arm to find forward. Now apply CCW presure to the prop to turn the driveshaft until it mates with the splined coupler in the upper gearcase. Don't forget the o-ring between the gearcases which seal the oil passage. Now make sure the shift arm mates with the upper shift coupler.
