I have a 1986 4.3 V-6 in/out motor that has an intermitten heating problem. Normally everything working great then all of a sudden the the tempature over heats rapidly. If I stop the engine a wait a few minute, then restart I can see the water tempature goes back down to normal. Just to be sure it wasn't a gauge issue I check the hoses on the motor and they were hot, once the temp gauge came back down I could tell they were cool to the touch and water was flowing.

The first time this happen I assumed I had something blocking the intake on the outdrive, when I raise it to check I didn't see anything and lowered the unit and tried to start it. I just assumed whatever was on it may have fallen off. However now it's happen three times and I never see anything blocking the intake.

What are the basic thing I should check?

Thanks

Jerry, I would check for a sticking thermostat.

Impeller change, t-stat changed.

Than run it, still over heating, if you have heat exchanger clean it out.

Still over heating risers got to be pulled.

Engine mounted water pump still have vanes?

Post what happens

Re: 4.3 V6 Inyermitten Over-Heating Problem

I got a V6 4.3 Mercruiser I/O on a 1989 Glastron 195SS That I took to the ocean this weekend and broke down. Previously I took it to a lake and had a blast with no problems. So I am wondering what happend this weekend? Is this boat freshwater only? The problem that occured is that the engine started overheating after like 30 minutes in the ocean. I noticed that my engine started smoking and I had to shut the engine down. Also I noticed that my engine was getting no water to it to cool it down. Can someone give me some advice on what to check. Oh yeah previous owner says he removed the thermostat. Was this a dumb move? Previous owner says that he replaced the impeller 2 months ago. Someone help please!
