I have a 1995 4.3LX merc and the valve covers say "vortec" on them but I've read some contradictory information that says it may not be. Is there a way to know if it is actually a vortec motor? Or did someone clever just grab some vortec valve covers and sport it up. I don't have the whole serial number handy but it's in the 0F4... range. Just curious, Thanks

I think from reading on here that vortecs didnt hit boats until 96. But could be wrong I know my valve covers say vortec and have been told mine is non vortec and mines the same engine.

Easiest way to find out, check the bolts that hold the intake manifold to the heads.

I remember reading something about that. Mine has 12 bolts and I think the vortec's only had 8...or something like that. Was it common for GM to use the vortec valve covers on these engines? Or did someone else change them out, since it's apparently not an isolated incident? Thanks

Ayuh,.... The Vortec name was used before the Fast-Burn heads that now carry that name were Intro'd....
The Vortec Heads came out in 1996....
The Vortec Heads only have 2 retaining bolts per corner of the intake manifold,+ None in the center area...
Your motor will have 12 intake retaining bolts,.... Vortec Heads only use 8 bolts on the intake...
